Tisha Johnson, Chief Designer Interiors at Volvo Cars Concept and Monitoring Centre, tells us how the new-design child safety seat will function.

 

"Volvo was always exploring you know how to innovate¹ and how to lead with regard to child safety, and we have also moved our car up in a luxury segment. We now have a four seater XC 90 called Volvo Excellence². That car offers us an opportunity to look at the space in a different way. It is an opportunity to take the front seat out, we've looked at the concept of having a lounge Console put in, that's more for having a vanity, a place to rest your feet and entertainment space, but we could also see family parents wanting to be able to use that space in a special way. So here we can take the front seat out, we can put in a childseat rearward-facing, you end up with better excellent ingress or egress³, being able to put the child in or take the child out, and being able to have a really nice strong connection with the child while you are in the car."

 

According to Johnson, the idea originated in a conversation with the president of Volvo, Li Shufu, when he reviewed the XC90 Excellence Lounge Console Concept.

 

"We absolutely see it as elevating that emotional experience, we think of the well-being⁴ of the child and the parents being able to enhance that, but we also see that as a really nice genre⁵ for the child safety as well."

 

The design also leaves enough storage for those vital child accessories such as diapers, bottles, wipes and so on.
