Currently new environmental-friendly sources from wind, solar and terrestrial heat have been introduced in Tibet, which giving farmers and herds1 people access to a more convenient life.

Chinanews, Lhasa, Nov. 21 - Some 630 Tibetan households have already opted2 for marsh3 gas in this winter, and a few years later, such clean energy will be popularized in Tibet, and Tibetans will soon bid adieu to cow dung fuel as marsh gas takes over as the new cooking medium.

In Tibetan pasturing areas, dunghills can be seen in most families' compounds. Currently new environmental-friendly sources from wind, solar and terrestrial heat have been introduced in Tibet, which giving farmers and herds people access to a more convenient life.

Tibet has longer sunshine time than other parts of China, and many people make their living on flocks and herds, which provide enough materials to make methane4 there. Developing marsh gas in Tibet will also help to build advanced ecological5 agriculture and protect local fragile environmental system. Because of low air pressure and lack of oxygen on the Tibetan Plateau, it is very hard to construct marsh gas pools in Tibet.

Agricultural authorities announced in last August that most Tibetans could have access to marsh gas in the next few years. The central government has also allocated6 over 10 million yuan (US$1.25 million) for the construction of rural marsh gas units. Engineers with related knowledge from Liaoning and Sichuan provinces have been selected and sent to Lhasa. So far, eight counties in Xigazi (Shigatse) and Nagri prefectures have completed their marsh gas constructions.

Tibetan farmers and herds people enjoy warming themselves and cooking by this new energy. There are some 250 Tibetan engineers capable of constructing marsh gas pools at the moment.
