Chinanews Beijing, June 29 – Beijing citizens now pay more attention to their behaviors than before in public places. For example, in the past, when there was rain, radio host would only talk about the weather conditions and the traffic. Now, they will talk more about how to behave with civility in rainy days.
“People who drive a car in rainy days should be careful not to drive too fast. Otherwise, the rainwaters on the street might spatter onto pedestrians2,” a radio listener recently sent a message to the radio program. “On wet days, a driver should feel happy to be able to have shelter from the rain in his car. So, they need to be considerate to people walking in the open air.”
In the past, few people would care about such trivial3 things like how to drive in rainy days. However, on June 27, a thunderstorm swept Beijing and radio hosts held heated discussions4 about the topic with radio listeners.
In the past, it was common to see that during rainy days, many drivers in Beijing drove their cars at a great speed. The water on the streets spattered as the car roared5 along the street and the water splashed6 onto the angry pedestrian1. Such scene is rarely seen these days.
After Beijing won the bid to host the Olympic Games, the city has made great efforts to improve its image. Televisions broadcast many ads related7 with public interests. Beijing sets the 11th day every month as the Queuing Day, which is meant to encourage commuters to queue up while waiting at bus stops. Taxi drivers begin to learn to speak English. The city has launched8 a “Smile Beijing” program and many volunteers try to offer good services with a smiling face. Government, citizens and the whole society in Beijing devote great effort to raise the quality of the public.
According to the latest information, in 2005 and 2006, bad behaviors, such as littering, spitting and jumping the queue had become less. Few pedestrians walk outside the zebra lines to cross the streets and few of them walk across the street with the red light on. The public behavior civilization index9 has risen from 65.21 to 69.06. The public’s general quality has improved greatly.
“We will try to improve ourselves from little things, as a small step forward will make a big difference. If one wants to become a civilized10 person, act now and don’t wait until 2008”. Such has become a consensus11 of many Beijing citizens.
