Chinanews, Beijing, June 11 – “Among those who are sitting here today, some, who are actually in the middle class in society, might think that they belong to the lower class group in society.”

The statement was made by an expert from the Finance1 Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) when he delivered a report at a meeting room in CASS last Wednesday, the 21st Century Business Herald2 reported.

The expert's statement is based on a recent report made by Li Peilin, head of the Finance Institute at CASS. In Li's report, titled "The Current Problems That Are Related with China's Development Issue and People's Livelihood," it is said that after China has witnessed a high economic growth, most Chinese people are actually not satisfied with their income growth. On the contrary, many people think that their life has become worse off and they are now moving down to the lower middle class in society.

The report’s conclusion was based on a social survey made last year. The survey shows that in 2006, about 29.1% of the Chinese regard themselves as in the middle-lower class or the lower class in society. 24.5% of the people thought they belonged to the lower class group. In all, 53.6% of the Chinese people thought they were either in the lower middle class or in the lower class in society. The percentage points had risen by 2.6 and 9.9 points compared with related percentage points in 2003. On the other hand, the percentage points of people who thought they were in the upper middle class, the middle class or the upper class were declining3.

In countries like India, South Korea and the United States, usually about 50% of the people think that they are in the middle class in society. In China, however, the situation is just the opposite. An interesting case in point is that in Beijing, a middle-level official, who earns over 5,000 yuan a month, still regards himself as a member of the lower middle class group in society. In supporting his conclusion, the official says that although he makes a seemingly4 large sum of money every month, the money should be used to pay for the housing loan, to support the life of his old parents and to pay for his kid’s educational fees, etc. In the end, he still has a heavy financial burden.

The survey shows that in a society that changes rapidly, due to some problems in the income distribution order, not only the low-income group are not satisfied with their income level, even the middle-income group and some high-income people are also dissatisfied with their income level.
