Chinanews, Beijing, June 11 – Due to insufficient1 education in life value and the mounting social pressure, adolescents tend to commit suicide more easily than before. At the China Adolescents Life Education Forum2, experts said that in China, suicide has become the top killer3 among people between the age of 15 and 34. Suicide accounts for 26.34% of the total deaths of this particular group of people. When more and more children become the single child in their families, experts urge that parents should give more information to their kids to let them value their life, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.
In last May, five college students died killed themselves by jumping off from a tall building. Related statistics show that over the past few years, more than ten students died every year by committing suicide. The Huilongguan Hospital in Beijing has spent seven years in doing a survey on adolescent death. The survey shows that about 60,000 young people died every year as a result of suicide, not including the greater number of young people who attempted suicide. Among middle school children, one in every five once thought of committing suicide, accounting4 for 20.4% of the total sampling number. About 6.5% of the children did make plans in order to end their lives, according to a report released by the Peking University Children and Youth Hygiene5 Research Institute. This reporter has learned that many primary and middle school children wanted to end their lives because of their poor academic performance or because they were insulted by their schoolmates. The Beijing Suicide Research and Prevention Center has assessed the mentality6 of people who attempted suicide. The survey shows that among those who had severe mental problems, 37% had nursed the idea of killing7 themselves for less than five minutes before they really took action, 46% had nursed the idea for less than 10 minutes, and 60% for less than 2 hours before they actually did so. In other words, many people did not think for long before they took action to kill themselves.
