Chinanews, Beijing, May 11 – In a tall building in SOHO building group in Beijing, Miao Miao, a young woman coming to Beijing from Hebei province, was sitting near the window glazing1 over. She missed her daughter at home. However, once thinking of the boring life there, she felt that she had made a right decision to come to a big city. Recently, she was learning the steel tube dance in Beijing together with several other girls, the Nanfang Weekend reported.

Accompanied by strong music, students twisted their bodies and practised some difficult movements on the steel tubes. They all wore long boots, which allegedly could increase the friction2 to keep them stay on the tubes. Despite this, Miao Miao still could not hold the tubes tightly and finally fell down. Luckily enough, she was not badly hurt. In order to get her certificate, she practised the movement again.

She told this reporter that before she came to Beijing, she had worked as a telephone operator at her hometown. However, she thought the job was really tiresome3. Only in the ball room could she release her energy. Dancing made her feel that she had some passion inside the body. Once she happened to learn that a school in Beijing was offering a steel tube dance class and students could get the certificates for coach with only a few months learning. Thinking that she could make a living by opening her own steel tube dance class, Miao Miao finally came to Beijing. However, at night, she often thought of her little child at home.

Miao Miao's teacher was called Luo Lan. Miao Miao and other students called her Sister Lan. Talking about her school, Luo Lan was very excited. She told this reporter that she had once worked as a math teacher in school. At that time, she was a dancing fan. Finding that teaching was really boring, she finally quitted her job and started a new life. She once taught belly4 dance and was one of the first batch5 of belly dance coaches in Beijing. She had done a successful job and since then, she came to realize that one could do anything successfully so long as one had good ideas.

“Before I taught belly dance, I had heard people say that dancing was very good for one to keep in shape. However, it was after I gave birth to a baby that I began to practise the dance. After a month’s practice, I was surprised to see that it really did work,” Luo Lan said.

After that, she decided6 to open a class on steel tube dance.

The students in her class were divided into several types: those who wanted to keep fit, those who learned to perform and those who wanted to be coaches after learning. Most of the students who practised such dance for keeping fit are young white collar women. However, students who learn it for the coach certificate are mainly from other provinces. In fact, many students who do get their certificates after learning stay with Luo Lan and try to expand the market with her together.
