China's chief sports governing body has announced plans to limit spending and check extravagance in the Chinese Super League.

A spokesperson from the General Administration of Sport, Xiao Zhiliang, says they are looking at capping the purchase of foreign players. 

 

"The General Administration of Sport and China's Football Association is considering how to put limits on purchasing expensive foreign players. One measure is to get a clear look of the financial status of the football clubs, including their annual income. And then we will create rational regulations on finance."

 

Xiao says authorities are looking at levying¹ taxes on high-income players.

 

He added that the extravagant² buying of overseas football clubs should also be checked, adding that clubs which are over-leveraged will be disposed of. 

 

Recent record-breaking purchases in the pre-season transfer window include Oscar's 75 million dollars move from Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG and Shanghai Shenhua's 50 million dollar purchase of Carlos Tevez.
