Chinanews, Beijing, July 27 – Several rock bars found in Mentougou District, Beijing, might be the traces of glaciers1 in the Quaternary Period. A group of glaciologists, went to investigate the rocks on July 25.

The rocks are scattered2 in the bushes outside Xiehejian Village, one of them as big as 5.5 m tall, 7 m long and 6.1 m wide.

“The scratches on the rocks must have been caused by the movement of glaciers,” said Han Tonglin, a glaciologist. Han estimated that the rock should have been formed 200 million years ago. There is a large scratch as big as 30 sq m, with many striates and cracks on its surface.

According to Han, this should be the biggest glacial rock ever found in Beijing.

“There are many glacial deposits like it in the valley,” said Wang Hongjie, who discovered the rock.

This rock will provide important information on the distribution of Quaternary glaciers in Beijing, which will be useful to the research of climate changes there.
