Chinanews, Chongqing, Mar1. 30 – After nine hours of operation, a pair of twins in Shizhu County, Chongqing, who were born with both male and female reproductive organs, have finally become women, the Chongqing Evening News reported.
The operations were done on Tuesday at the Xinan Hospital. Days before the operation, the CCTV Science Channel interviewed the twin sisters, Xiao Qing and Xiao Hua, with the hope of making the public know more about their life and their problems. In science field, there are two kinds of problems related with sex, hermaphroditism and transsexuality. In the former case, the persons involved have some physical problems since their birth, and they have both male and female reproductive organs; while in the latter case, the person involved is a normal male or female physically2, yet he or she wants to become a person of the opposite sex. The twin sisters belong to the former case, said Professor Lu from the hospital. People with hermaphroditism suffer both physically and mentally. So they have to take an operation in order to become a normal person. This is totally different from those people who want to change their sex, the professor added. The twin sisters should pay 50,000 yuan for their surgical3 operations. However, after learning that they were born in a poor family, doctors in the hospital said they could reduce their operation costs to at least 30,000. After the operation, the twin sister will take some estrin treatments to help them develop more like females.
