A plane powered solely¹ by the sun landed in Cairo in the early hours of Wednesday, successfully completing the 16th leg of its round-the-world journey.

Solar Impulse 2 took off from Seville in southern Spain early on Monday en route to Cairo, its last stop before returning to Abu-Dhabi.

 

Egypt's minister of civil aviation was among those awaiting the plane's arrival along with the Swiss ambassador to Cairo, Markus Leitner, who called the voyage an inspiration for the future of clean energy.

 

"This is an airplane carrying a message, it's carrying an inspiration and that's what it's all about. You have to work harder, you have to think in a more ambitious way and then you can achieve your goals. This is not carrying a lot of passengers, this is carrying inspiration and that's what this plane is all about, it's motivation for us as the owners, but it's also for governments, for investors², for entrepreneurs."

 

Throughout its journey, which began in Abu-Dhabi, the plane has been piloted in turns by Swiss aviators³ Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard.
