Chinanews, Beijing, February 8 – Nearly 50% of 20 million babies that are born in China every year are delivered through C-sections. “This is absolutely not normal, and it has something to do with the fact that many doctors fail to give correct instructions to the expectant mothers, ” said a doctor in Guangzhou No. 2 People's Hospital.   Statistics from Wuhan show that in 2005, 56.6% of babies were delivered through C-sections, and the figure in 2003 was 46.26% and 51.73% in 2004. A hospital in Jianghan district even perfomed C-sections on 90% of expectant mothers hospitalized there.   WHO suggests hospitals should control the proportion of C-sections under 15%, while the proportion in China in the 1950s to the 1970s was only 5%, However, it has kept rising since the 1980s, when it reached 30% then.   C-section has its advantages in that it shortens the time of delivery, but it may also have bad effects on the health of both mother and baby, and therefore should not be abused.
