Chinanew, Beijing, Feb. 1 – Recently, some domestic and foreign media report about a group of people in China who make ads on websites or go to matchmaking agencies in order to marry quickly. The group has raised much concern from society, the Beijing Morning Post reported.

The phenomenon is confirmed by a matchmaking agent.

“There are indeed many people who recently come here asking us to find appropriate marriage partners for them. Yet only 20% of them want to marry soon,” said Liu Shuqin, head of the Marriage and Family Consulting Service Center under the Beijing Municipal Women’s Federation1.

Zhang Jie, manager of the Mengyuan Matchmaking Agency, said that the number of people who came to their office to look for marriage partners had increased by 30% from last month.

“Every day, we have about ten customers coming to our office and 20% of them want to marry quickly. About 8% of them are college graduates. In our branch office in Haidian, college students account for 10% of our total customers, a proportion that is higher than in other districts in Beijing. Most of them graduate fresh from college,” Zhang said.

Apart from seeking help from matchmaking agents, some people also post their requirements for marriage on various websites.

When this reporter searched websites by entering such information as “20-23 years old” and “with college certificates or junior college certificates”, numerous pieces of information popped up and they accounted for over half of the total number of people registered on website. A website that did matchmaking service only for college students showed as many as 704,000 pieces of information that matched the searching results.

In explaining these people’s motives2 for a quick marriage, Wang Weiming, deputy director of the Committee of Matchmaking Service Industry at the China Association of Social Workers, said that the phenomenon might result from four reasons. First, many people who remain single in their 30s feel that they would become embarrassed when they return home during the Spring Festival holidays if their families and relatives see that they still remain single at such an "old" age. So they desperately3 want to find a marriage partner to go home with them for the Spring Festival family reunion. Second, some white collars deem that during the Spring Festival holidays they have some free time to consider their marriage problem. Third, some people see that their friends or relatives have tied the knots, so they also want to get married. Fourth, some college students or college graduates want to ease the work or employment pressure by getting married.
