Chinanews, Shanghai, Jan. 27 – A young mother in Jiading district in Shanghai recently wrote a letter to the Shanghai municipal government. The letter aroused the concern of the authorities about mothers’ right to nurse their babies in public places.

In her letter, the mother said that recently, she took a subway train with her baby. On the way, the baby got hungry and wanted to have some breast milk. Hearing the baby crying for a long time, the mother finally had to breast-feed the baby in the cabin. However, passengers on the train criticized her actions for being “uncivilized.”

The mother’s embarrassing experience was not rare. After investigating many similar cases, the Shanghai Women’s Federation1 urges that some special room in public places where mothers can nurse their babies. It says that the room might be placed near the rest room but not totally connected with it, so that mothers can feed their babies and change nappies for the babies easily.

“The nursing room might not be very large or costly2. Yet it should offer humanistic care to mother and baby, ” said Shi Qiuqin, vice3 chairperson of the Shanghai Municipal Women’s Federation.

The issue will be brought forth4 for discussion during the upcoming session of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress and Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
