Chinanews, Hong Kong, Nov. 22 – As mainland economy develops fast, the living standard gap between mainland and Hong Kong has been narrowed down. More and more women in Hong Kong now like to marry mainland men. Statistics from Hong Kong SAR government shows that the number of such marriage had increased dramatically, from 675 cases in 1986 to 6,483 cases last year, an increase of nearly 900 percent in two decades.
Hong Kong women now place higher requirements on their future husbands. At the same time, the conditions of men in the mainland have improved greatly in recent years. So more Hong Kong women are willing to marry men in the mainland these days, some experts say. According to reports published in the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po, in recent years marriage cases between Hong Kong women and mainland men have been on the increase. Last year, there were about 30,000 marriages between Hong Kong and mainland people. Information from the latest issue of a monthly magazine also shows that in 1986, about 15,776 men in Hong Kong found their marriage partners in the mainland. Last year, 28,145 men from Hong Kong married mainland women, a increase of 78% in twenty years. It is expected that the problem of imbalanced sex ratio in Hong Kong will further deteriorate1 in future. It is expected that, by 2036, among every ten Hong Kong women at marriagable age, only seven can find a husband locally. More women in Hong Kong might have to choose their husbands somewhere else.
