Chinanews, Beijing, July 5 – The single child generation are now at their marriageable age. However, as they establish their own families, doing household chores has become a problem for many of them. In order to solve this problem, many young people now prefer to hire housekeepers1 to do the housework for them, the Economic Information Daily reported.

These young people, who are the only child in their family, have been much spoiled by their parents, seldom doing housework at home. This might not be a problem before they get married. However, after they set up their own families, trivial2 things such as household chores have emerged3 as a big problem. Sometimes, they even trigger4 family quarrels. Young people cannot learn to manage all household work overnight. Having no other choices, many young couples decide to ask housekeeping service companies to take care of the housework for them.

At present, such new way of life is very popular in big cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Harbin and Chengdu. In these cities, young couples, especially those who are in their 20s or 30s, prefer to hire housekeepers to do the cooking and laundry for them.

With the development of market economy, many new professions have emerged in society. Housekeeping service is one of them which could provide various types of household services for individuals and families. Their services thus meet the needs of young people, who are constantly faced with heavy work pressure, said Zhang Baoyi, director of the Institute of Sociology5 under the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences.

On the other hand, the fact that young women in today's society are free from doing household work is greatly attributed to their rising social status. Today, many young women have been able to receive higher education in colleges. They have also made achievements at work. Women's changing image has also raised a great challenge to traditional ideas which hold that women's role is restricted to homes. When more and more women start to join the labor6 market in society, couples in the family tend to hire housekeepers to do the household chores for them, said Xu Anqi, a researcher at the Institute of Sociology under the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
