Chinanews, Beijing, June 19 - Beijing will hold its first maneuver1 against terrorist nuclear attack in July, which will help to complete the city's emergency handling system. Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Administration, Beijing Municipal Health Administration, Beijing Municipal Disease Prevention and Control Center and Beijing Municipal Fire Station will take part in the maneuver.
The maneuver will imitate a dirty-bomb (a kind of “radiological dispersal device” that combines a conventional explosive, such as dynamite2, with radioactive material) explosion outside a stadium in the city, with several persons wounded and the environment polluted. Then the related personnel of the organizations mentioned above will start their operation to rescue the wounded and clean the environment. First, fire fighters will confirm a possible route to enter the scene with the help of radiation detectors3. Then doctors will enter the scene to help the wounded, who will be treated according to how bad their wounds are. It doesn't require advanced technologies to produce dirty-bombs, thus it might be common to see such bombs in future campaigns against terrorism. Though dirty-bombs won't destroy cities like ordinary thermonuclear weapons, it will bring worse pollution and more terrible death toll4.
