Chinanews, Xiamen, May 23 – Anyone who has seen the American Oscar film Rainman might be deeply impressed by Raymond Babbitt, the hero in the film who suffered seriously from autism. In Xiamen, Fujian Province there is a group of people who are just like Raymond Babbitt: they also suffer from autism and now they are receiving medical treatment in a rehabilitation1 center in Xiamen, the Fujian-based Dongnan Morning News reported.

At present, about one hundred children who suffer from autism are receiving medical treatment in the rehabilitation center. However, based on related information, it is estimated that in Xiamen, there are about 1,000 children suffering from this disease, said Yang Xicong, chairman of the Xiamen Municipal Association for the Handicapped.

Since the first 4 cases of infantile autism were reported in Nanjing in 1982, there are now about 1.8 million people in China who suffer from this disease, with 400,000 of them being children. Infantile autism has become one of the most serious mental diseases in China.

“According to related statistics, less than one hundred patients who suffer from infantile autism are being treated. The other patients stay at home. In rural areas, many of such patients are treated like maniacs2 and halfwits, and are therefore locked at home,” said Yang.

Medical treatment in the rehabilitation center for a child suffering from autism would usually cost 3,000 yuan. Sometimes the medical costs might be as high as 7,000-8,000 yuan.

Xiamen municipal government is going to issue a regulation to help the handicapped children in the city. With this regulation, local government might allocate3 a certain sum of money every month to pay for the medical costs of the handicapped children in Xiamen. Most of the funds will be used to help children who are deaf-mute, mentally retarded4, or suffer from autism, Yang said.

Like the other diseases, the sooner that medical treatment is offered to autistic people, the better. For autistic patients, the most appropriate time for them to receive medical treatment is when they were 36, Yang noted5.
