Chinanews, Beijing, May 19 – Recently, a survey was done of the nutritional1 conditions of Chinese school-age children. These children live in families of different income levels, most of them aged2 6-17. The survey report shows that 11% of the children suffer either from malnutrition3 or obesity4, the People's Daily reported.

The report divides the children into five categories, based on the different family income levels in which they live. The five categories are: those whose family incomes are below 800 yuan, 800-1,999 yuan, 2,000-4,999 yuan, 5,000-9,999 yuan, and over 10,000 yuan. The result shows that children of different family income level's will have different living styles and these living styles will eventually affect their dietary structure, their growth and their health.

As the family income decreases, children living in these families begin to have malnutrition problem. The malnutrition incidence of children living in families of the lowest income level reaches 70%, the highest of any category. This is even so with children living in rural areas, since for boys living in families with an income below 800 yuan, their malnutrition rate reaches the alarming rate of 20%.

In general, the malnutrition rate of Chinese children at school age reaches 9.2%. For anemia5 rate, a disease related with malnutrition, the anemia incidences of the five categories of children are 9.8%, 10.1%, 10.1%, 7.4% and 4.7%, respectively. The anemia incidence is highest in these two categories: those with a family income of 800-1,999 yuan and those with the family income staying around 2,000-4,999 yuan. In all categories, the anemia incidence of children at the age of 13-17 is higher than children at the age of 6-12. At the same family income level, children living in cities are taller and yet fatter than those living in rural areas.

As the family income level increases, overweight and obesity problems become more evident. The overweight incidence of children living in the richest family category is 3.6 times that of children living in families of the lowest family income level, and their obesity incidence is 4.6 times that of the latter. For children living in high-income families (with a family income of over 10,000 yuan), most of their energy source comes from fat. In cities, the percentage of energy from fat reaches 39.2% while in rural areas, such it is 35.2%, both far exceeding the upper limit level (30%) set by the World Health Organization. This shows that children living in high-income families do not have a proper dietary structure and they take more nutrition than they can consume.
