Chinanews, Beijing, Mar1. 7 – Inspired by the achievements made by their fathers, the children of migrant workers yearn2 for the city life. They adapt their behaviors and ways of thinking to those of townspeople and they want to make a living with their intelligence instead of physical strength, just like those living in cities. In fact, the children of many migrant workers were born and raised in cities and are used to city life. It is impossible for them to return to the countryside, the Market News reported.

The Zhejiang Provincial3 Academy of Labour and Social Security recently issued the "Employment Report for Migrant Workers in Zhejiang for the Year of 2007". The report gives its attention to a special group in society, the children of Chinese migrant workers who were born in the 1980s.

The behaviors and ways of thinkings of the children of Chinese migrant workers diverge4 from those raised in rural areas. These children are very different from their parents in that they have already become city dwellers5, said Chen Shida, president of the Zhejiang Provincial Academy of Labour and Social Security.

However, compared with city children, the children of migrant workers do not have much skill and most of them don’t have a chance to access higher education. Many of them start to work after graduating from middle school. They are spoiled by their parents and therefore unable to endure hardships like their parents did. They are unwilling6 to do tiring physical work with a low income. On the other hand, work that pays well requires much skill and is unsuitable for them to do.

Unsatisfied with their current status, the children of migrant workers shift between different jobs frequently. While such shift is the result of market force, it should be noted7 that since these children haven't acquired any skills, the shift does not bring them any chance to raise their living conditions.

These children hope very much that the government can provide them with more training so that they can learn some skills. With the new skill, they can not only earn more money, they can even realize their dreams by starting a new business. To them, learning a new skill is much more important than Hukou, or permanent residence permit.
