The popularity of songrong mushrooms is extending from fine dining restaurants to everyday dinner tables.

Retailers¹ in Yunnan's capital, Kunming, are reporting a sharp increase in demands for the highly sought-after songrong mushroom, reports the Kunming Daily.

 

Managers at the Mushuihua Wild Fungus² Wholesale³ Market in Kunming say they're currently moving around 5 tons of songrong, also known as the matsutake mushroom, per day.

 

The rush to buy the popular mushrooms comes amid sharply lower prices being demanded by retailers this year.

 

While the mushrooms were retailing⁴ for between 550 to 800 yuan per kilogram last year, this year, songrong is being sold for as low as 70 yuan per kilogram this year in Kunming.
