A grandson of late South African leader Nelson Mandela is free on bail¹ following accusations² of rape³.

Mbuso Mandela is accused of having sex with a 15-year old girl at a restaurant earlier this month.

The 24-year-old's defense⁴ team is now pressing to have the young girl's birth records produced, claiming they believe she is over 16-years old.

This is the minimum age for consensual sex in South Africa.

Prosecutor⁵ Phindi Louw says they will still plan to take the case to trial, regardless of what new information comes forward.

"We accept today's decision as the NPA (National Prosecuting⁶ Authority), obviously the onus⁷ was on the accused to adduce evidence to convince the court that he's a suitable candidate for bail, so they succeeded in doing that. And from here it is for us to go and prepare for the trial".

Mbuso Mandela is due to appear back in court in mid-September.
