EVE gently held WALL · E and dashed onto the next level, arriving at the courtyard of the economy-class deck. A wall of stewards1 came forward and tried to block their path. "Halt!" a steward2 shouted. Behind him, other stewards stood ready to use their freeze rays to stop WALL · E and EVE in their tracks.

The mob of reject-bots sprang into action. They would do anything for WALL · E. The defective3 beautician-bot lunged forward. Using her hand mirrors, she deflected4 the oncoming barrage5 of freeze rays. Umbrella-bots took up the cause and snapped open, protecting WALL · E, EVE, and the throng6 of reject-bots behind them.

On the bridge, Auto7 watched as the stewards' blips disappeared from his screen. Certain that things couldn't get any worse, Auto was astounded8 to see the image of the Captain appear on his screen. And the Captain was holding the plant!

"Ha! Ha! Look what I got, Auto!" the Captain said, taunting9 him. "That's right! The plant!"

"Not possible," Auto answered angrily, his eye going wide.

The Captain was tricking Auto. He didn't have the real plant. He was merely projecting the image of the plant taken from EVE's memory chip into his hands.

"You want it?" the Captain said, hoping Auto would take the bait. "Come and get it, Blinky!"

The portal in the Captain's ceiling suddenly snapped open and Auto shot down into the room. Auto's eye saw nothing.

"Captain?" Auto said, cautiously searching the dark room. Suddenly, the Captain leaped at Auto. He grabbed on to the machine and refused to let go as Auto dragged him around the room.

"Let go! Let go!" Auto yelled. Auto thrashed wildly and finally yanked the Captain up through the portal in the ceiling and onto the bridge.

"You're not getting away from me, One-Eye!" the Captain shouted. He reached for the big blue button as he and Auto flailed10 around the bridge.

"That's it! A little closer," the Captain grunted11. "Must ... push ... button!"

All of a sudden, Gopher popped out of his pneumatic tube and saw the fight. He immediately charged toward the Captain.

Auto whipped the Captain around, accidentally hitting Gopher with the Captain's foot. The force sent Gopher crashing through the control-room window. With his siren screaming, Gopher landed in a heap on the lido deck below.
