The death toll¹ of Afghanistan's recent avalanches² triggered by heavy snowfall has risen above 200, officials said on Thursday.

The heavy snow is set to last for two more days after an unusually dry winter led to fears of drought.

Officials have warned of an imminent³ humanitarian⁴ emergency in areas most severely⁵ hit by the bad weather, with snow sweeping⁶ through villages and blocking off roads.

Despite bringing misery⁷ to so many people, the snow is vital for Afghanistan, where much of the rural population dependent on agriculture relies on snow melting in the mountains to sustain crops in the spring and summer.
