| Nov. 11 - A 28-year-old Chinese-American lady was elected mayor of Fitchburg, Massachusetts on Thursday, the first minority mayor in the city's 243-year history.
Despite Lisa Wong, or Huang Sufen in Mandarin1, being quite a newcomer to politics, she received over 70 percent of the votes, and unseated four-term Fitchburg mayor Thomas Donnelly.
She aspires2 to make Fitchburg a cultural and commercial center in the suburbs of Boston, by introducing more investment and improving public security.
Before running her first campaign for municipal office, Wong had been working for the Fitchburg Redevelopment Authority for six years, and had served as a first full-time3 executive director since she was 24.
She has succeeded in attracting companies back into idle, local factories, thus adding revenue and creating job opportunities in the local community.
Wong was born to Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong, who have lived in the US for 35 years. Her father runs a restaurant and her mother works as a nurse. She graduated from Boston University as a major in economics and international relations.
Fitchburg, located 50 miles from Boston, was a manufacturing center during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century.
