Chinese Defense1 Minister Cao Gangchuan shakes hands with a Japanese official upon his arrival at Narita airport in Tokyo on Wednesday, August 29, 2007.

Aug. 30 - China and Japan kept healthy defense communication in recent years, and friendly ties as well as mutually-beneficial cooperation between the two countries contributed to regional peace and prosperity, Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan said in his speech at Narita airport on arriving Tokyo Wednesday.

Cao, also vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission and State Councilor, is making the official good-will visit, the first for a Chinese defense minister since 1998, at the invitation of Japanese Defense Minister.

In the backdrop of a friendship history of over 2,000 years, the development of bilateral3 relationship between China and Japan has been remarkable4 and fruitful in recent years, Cao said, adding that such a trend accorded with both countries' benefits.

Cao said he would exchange ideas with the Japanese side on topics of common interests to boost mutual2 understanding, trust and friendship, and to further strengthen the friendship between the people and defense sections of the two neighbors.

One of the goals of his tour is to push forward the Sino- Japanese mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests, Cao said.

During his five-day tour, Cao is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, new Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura and new Defense Minister Masahiko Komura. He is also to give a speech on China's defense policy and visit some facilities of the Self-Defense Forces.
