Chinanews, Beijing, Aug 20 – Last Friday, Peking University and NPO organization jointly1 released the result of an opinion poll carried out among both the Chinese and Japanese public. The opinion poll shows that more than 60% of the Chinese and Japanese public regard Sino-Japanese relations as very important. Over 50% of the public of the two countries think China and Japan can carry out some cooperative projects in the fields of energy and economy.

The survey was launched in China and Japan in May this year. About 2,000 Chinese public from Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Shenyang, as well as over 1,000 students from Peking University and Tsinghua University participated in the survey. In Japan, about 1,000 Japanese public and 300 intellectuals took part in the survey.

The survey shows that as the political ties between the two countries have witnessed the “ice-breaking” and “ice-melting”stages, public opinions about the two countries' relationship have also begun to turn warmer.

In the survey, the proportion of Chinese college students who have a “very good” or “fairly good” image about Japan has risen by 27.5 percentage points and that of Chinese public by 9.9 percentage points, compared with last year. For Japanese people, the proportion of Japanese public whose impression about China has improved “greatly” or “a little bit” over the past one year has increased by 10.2 percentage points and that proportion of Japanese intellectuals by 18.2 percentage points.

More than 60% of Chinese students and 70% of Chinese public hold an “optimistic” or “fairly optimistic” view about the prospect2 of Sino-Japanese relationship. Over 40% of Japanese public think such relationship will change for the better in future.

In addition, information shows that both the Chinese and Japanese public do not have much chance to conduct direct exchanges to know each other deeper. In light of this, finding more ways to promote exchanges between both peoples might be an important way for the two countries to improve their relations.
