Japan has restarted a second reactor¹ at a nuclear power plant in the southwest of the country.

The Number-2 unit at the Sendai plant will begin generating power next week.

The first reactor at the Sendai facility was restarted in August, ending a prolonged nuclear power hiatus in Japan.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga says this move will be the first of many.

"We will continue to restart nuclear reactors² that meet what's called one of the most strict safety standards in the world, respecting the judgment³ of the government's nuclear authority."

The Abe administration hopes to have nuclear power to account for 20 to 22-percent of the country's energy mix by 2030.
