China remains¹ the country with the largest number of students studying overseas in the world, despite a slowdown, reports China Central Television.

According to a report published on Monday by the Center for China and Globalization, a major Chinese think tank, 544,500 Chinese students studied abroad in 2016, up just under 4 percent from the previous year.

 

More than 4.58 million Chinese students have studied overseas from 1978 to 2016, said the report.

 

The same analysis shows the number of Chinese high school students studying in Canada account for more than half of all international high school students in that country.

 

The report also shows that over 31 percent of Chinese students chose to study business administration in 2016, a 4 percent increase compared with 2015.

 

In addition, China saw 11.3-percent growth in foreign student enrollments in 2016, with around 443,000 foreign students enrolled² in China.

 

China's Belt and Road Initiative has attracted more international students, according to the report, adding that the country's favorable study and employment policies for international students have also contributed to the growth.
