Thomas Hardy1

The Shadow on the Stone

I went by the Druid stone

That broods in the garden white and lone,

And I stopped and looked at the shifting shadows

That at some moments fall thereon

From the tree hard by with a rhythmic2 swing,

And they shaped in my imagining

To the shade that a well-known head and shoulders

Threw there when she was gardening.

I thought her behind my back,

Yea, her I long had learned to lack,

And I said: "I am sure you are standing3 behind me,

Though how do you get into this old track?"

And there was no sound but the fall of a leaf

As a sad response; and to keep down my grief

I would not turn my head to discover

That there was nothing in my belief.

Yet I wanted to look and see

That nobody stood at the back of me;

But I thought once more: "Nay4, I'll not unvision

A shape which, somehow, there may be."

So I went on softly from the glade,

And left her behind me throwing her shade,

As she were indeed an apparition-

My head unturned lest my dream should fade.

Snow in the Suburbs

Every branch big with it,

Bent every twig5 with it ;

Every fork like a white web-foot;

Every street and pavement mute:

Some flakes6 have lost their way, and grope back upward, when

Meeting those meandering7 down they turn and descend8 again.

The palings are glued together like a wall,

And there is no waft9 of wind with the fleecy fall.

A sparrow enters the tree

Whereon immediately

A snow-lump thrice his own slight size

Descends on him and showers his head and eyes.

And overturns him

And near inurns him,

And lights on a nether10 twig, when its brush

Starts off a volley of other lodging11 lumps with a rush.

The steps are a blanched12 slope,

Up which, with feeble hope,

A black cat comes, wide-eyed and thin,

And we take him in.

雪把树枝压弯了;
