Chinanews, Beijing, July 18 – China will set up a psychological development data bank for adolescents. The country plans to select 100,000 children as samples and information gathered from these children will be used as a basis for setting up the data bank and the various measuring systems for children, the Beijing Evening News reported.

About 40 million adolescents in China suffer from various psychological problems. Among them, 5%-8% of the children, or 16 million, are dyslexic and 6% of the children, or 19 million, have a problem in doing calculations. In addition, 8%-10% of the children, or 25 million, have study problems.

While China has a complete system and various advanced equipment to monitor students' physical health, there are no unified1 national standards set to test students' mental health so far in this country. In recent years, more and more children have displayed some mental problems and the incidence is still on the rise. It is estimated that the rate of incidence of the mental disease will reach 50% by 2020.

On Tuesday, China kicked off a project that aims to investigate the mental developmental conditions of Chinese children. The project will be directed by Dong Qi, a professor from the Institute of Cognitive2 Neuroscience and Learning under the Beijing Normal University, and Professor Lin Chongde, a psychologist from the Beijing Normal University. 80 psychological experts from more than 40 colleges and universities across China will participate in the project.

The experts will choose 100,000 children aged3 between 6 and 15 across China as samples to test their cognitive ability, learning ability, and mental health conditions. In particular, the test will cover students’ sense ability, the ability to remember things, their attention ability, spatial4 ability, the ability to reason and speak, their mathematics learning ability, their emotional behaviors, and their self-awareness.

After completing the investigation5, experts will start to set up criteria6 for reflecting children's different psychological conditions at different developmental stages. A pamphlet on children’s mental development will be issued. In addition, experts will start to build a set of measuring tools on psychology7 and a powerful data bank about all this testing information.
