Chinanews, Beijing, April 5 – According to a report by China Business Times, researchers from China and Myanmar are studying the practicability of building parallel oil and natural gas pipelines2 between the two countries. The dream of building an "energy highway" between China and Myanmar is becoming a reality.
The information was disclosed by Han Jingkuan, deputy director of the Planning Department of PetroChina,at the Forum3 of Sino-ASEAN Oil & Gas Pipeline1 Construction. Umyint Kyi, the general manager of Myanmar Petroleum4 Resources Ltd, also confirmed the authenticity5 of the information. The pipelines will extend to Chongqing, and tens of billions of tons of crude oil will be transferred there every year. China and Myanmar signed a treaty in last January, whereby PetroChina will contract a rich natural gas field in Myanmar, to provide about 10 million cubic meters of natural gas to China every day, with Chongqing as a relay station. Most importantly, the pipelines mentioned above will be completely new, not the "rented pipelines" referred to in previous news reporting.
