在最近的美国大选中，两党候选人对征收“暴力税”观点相左。奥巴马认为美国应该向石油公司征收暴利税，以税收补贴风力、太阳能和核能等替代能源的研发和生产，以求长远解决能源问题。麦凯恩则主张进行离岸钻探，认为应通过类似措施增加美国国内石油产量，从而减低对外国石油的依赖，实现能源独立。

    如果麦凯恩当选，大型能源公司可能会收益更大，因为麦凯恩不支持“暴利税”，而且金融公司就会因其在股利税，长期资本收益税，以及房地产税方面的政策中获益。

    那么，什么是“暴利税”呢？所谓的“暴利税”，是针对行业取得的不合理的过高利润征税。通过测算各种资源的成本、各种费用以及利润空间，保证留给企业足够的收入用于可持续发展的开支后，计算出暴利阶段，主要为了调控垄断行业的高利润。

    在上面的报道中，a windfall tax就是指a one-time direct tax on an unexpectedly large profit，即“暴利税”或“特别收益金”。这个用法也可以写成Windfall Profits Tax (WPT)。

    Windfall做名词有“意外的收获，侥幸所得”的意思，也就是a sudden happening that brings good fortune (as a sudden opportunity to make money)。如：He applied² the windfall to payment of his mortgage. （他把那笔意外的收入用于偿付抵押）。

    此外，它还可以指“风吹落的果实”，如：After the storm she gathered a basketful of windfall in the apple orchard³. （风暴过后，她从苹果园地上拣了满满一篮子苹果）。
