一说到“直觉”,许多人可能马上会想到instinct,比如 act on instinct 就是“凭直觉行动”。除了instinct,英语中还有别的常用词来表达直觉。

直觉很难解释清楚,似乎是天生的一种本能,是发自内心的一种惯性。因此英文中还常用gut一词来表示直觉。Gut1 这个词本身表示“内脏”,在俚语中引申为“内心的感觉”,比如:She felt in her gut that he was guilty. 她从心底知道他是有罪的。它又可用作形容词,在俚语中的意思就是“直觉的”,比如:I have a gut feeling that the country needs the support of all its people if we are not to fail.我深深觉得,如果我们的国家不想失败的话需要得到全民的支持。

不过,若将have guts2 理解成“有直觉”就错了,gut的复数形式不再表示直觉。用在非正式场合中,have guts表示“有勇气做某事”,例如:I don’t believe he has the guts! 我可不相信他有这么大勇气!

直觉还可以用hunch来表示,例如:I have a hunch3 that he didn’t really want to eat. 我有种直觉,他其实不想吃东西。Play one’s hunch 就是“跟着感觉走”的意思,比如:He did not know what they were up to, and decided4 to play his hunch. 他不知道他们想干什么,于是决定凭直觉行事了。

还有一个词也可以用来表示“直觉”,就是intuition,表示“the act or faculty5 of knowing or sensing without the use of rational processes; immediate6 cognition.直觉”,比如:And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. 最重要的是要有勇气遵从你的内心和直觉。
