IS IT WORTH?

　　这么玩命值得吗？

　　Horror gripped the heart of the World War I soldier, as he saw his lifelong friend fall inbattle. Caught in a trench with continuous gunfire whizzing over his head, the soldier asked hisLieutenant if he might go out into the “no man's land” between the trenches to bring his fallencomrade back.

　　“You can go,” said the Lieutenant, “but I don't think it will be worth it. Your friend isprobably dead and you may throw your own life away.”

　　The Lieutenant's words didn't matter, and the soldier went anyway. Miraculously he managedto reach his friend, hoisted him onto his shoulder and brought him back to their company's trench.

　　As the two of them tumbled in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer checked thewounded soldier, then looked kindly at his friend.

　　“I told you it wouldn't be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead, and you are mortallywounded.”

　　“It was worth it, though, sir,” the soldier said.

　　“How do you mean, ‘worth it'?” responded the Lieutenant. “Your friend is dead!”

　　“YES, sir,” the private answered. “But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was stillalive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, ‘Jim, I knew you'd come.'”

　　第一次世界大战中，一名士兵看到自己的平生挚友在战斗中倒下，内心充满恐惧。连天的炮火就在头顶呼啸而过，他被困在战壕里。他向中尉请示要冲进战壕之间的“无人区”把倒下的战友救回来。

　　“你可以去，”中尉说，“但是我觉得你这么做不值得。你的朋友可能已经死了，你这一去可能会送命啊。”

　　中尉的话没有动摇战士前去的决心。他奇迹般地找到了朋友，把他扛在肩头，带回了连队的战壕。他俩跌跌撞撞走进战壕，战士也受了伤。长官检查了他的伤情，然后看了看他的朋友。

　　“我跟你说过这么做不值得，”他由衷地说，“你的朋友已经阵亡了，你也伤得不轻。”

　　“可我觉得值得，长官。”战士说。

　　“‘值得'？怎么讲？”中尉问道：“你这朋友已经死了！”

　　“话虽这么说，长官，”战士说，“可我觉得这一趟没白去，我找到他的时候他还活着，听到他说‘吉姆兄弟，我就知道你会来的！'时，我已经心满意足了。”
