Ren is curious about the relationship between the UK and Australia. In many ways the two countries have a lot of things in common and they speak the same language.

 

Australia was set up as a British colony hundreds of years ago so the two places have a historical connection. This has led to some good - humoured assumptions about the Australians, or Aussies as they are affectionately known.

 

These assumptions are called stereotypes¹. Some British people think an Aussie's attitude to life is laid back 放松的，随和的and also that they use a number of catchphrases 名言、警句. See if you can hear these ones in this programme:

There is big sporting rivalry² between the two countries. This is good natured and involves a bit of teasing but when Britain wins The Ashes cricket tournament, as they have just done, people are a bit more sensitive. Despite this, the two countries remain best of friends.
