The wish to fool Heaven, is madness on Earth;
The hearts'  tunnel in its detours holds
Nothing which isn't first lit up by the Gods.
Everything man does, he does within their sight
Even actions done in darkness,  or so he thinks.
A pagan who was under suspicion of being a heretic,
And who believed in God, using this word
Only in order to benefit his assets,
Went to consult Apollo.
As soon as he arrived in his sanctuary:
Is what I am holding in my hand, he asked him,
is it alive or not?
He was holding a sparrow, they say,
Ready to either smother the poor thing,
Or to free it  immediately
Calculating to put Apollo at fault.
Apollo guessed what he had in mind:
Dead or alive, said he to him, show us your bird,
And set no more traps for me;
You would regret such a stratagem, 
For I can see far, and  I reach in the same way.

Note:  In the sixth line--in French: Un païen qui
sentait quelque peu le *fagot has two meaning:

1. *Sentir le fagot- (translated literally) = smelt
of  a bundle of  kindling.

2:  In the fable it means = to be under suspicion of
being an heretic because long ago heretics were
burnt at the stake.

L'Oracle et l'Impie

Vouloir tromper le Ciel, c'est folie à la Terre ;
Le Dédale des coeurs en ses détours n'enserre
Rien qui ne soit d'abord éclairé par les Dieux.
Tout ce que l'homme fait, il le fait à leurs yeux
Même les actions que dans l'ombre il croit faire.
Un Païen qui sentait quelque peu le fagot,
Et qui croyait en Dieu, pour user de ce mot,
Par bénéfice d'inventaire,
Alla consulter Apollon.
Dès qu'il fut en son sanctuaire :
Ce que je tiens, dit-il, est-il en vie ou non ?
Il tenait un moineau, dit-on,
Prêt d'étouffer la pauvre bête,
Ou de la lâcher aussitôt
Pour mettre Apollon en défaut.
Apollon reconnut ce qu'il avait en tête :
Mort ou vif, lui dit-il, montre-nous ton moineau,
Et ne me tends plus de panneau ;
Tu te trouverais mal d'un pareil stratagème.
Je vois de loin, j'atteins de même.
