出现了肺病的征兆。

   此句不能译作：“肺病的征兆发展了(或加深了)”。develop的基本词义在大多数场合下的确作“发展”解。例如：
   China is a developing country.
   中国是个发展中的国家。
   A seminar will be in Hong Kong on southern China development and its economic ompact on Hong Kong.
   一个关于华南发展以及它对香港经济的影响的研讨会将在香港举行。

   但是， develop除了“发展”的涵义外， 还可以作“显现”，“发生”解。
 例如在Symptoms of consumption developed.一句中，developed作“出现”，“显现”解， 相当于appeared.

   请注意下列句中develop所表达的涵义：

   Food shortage developed in India.
   印度出现了粮荒的现象。
   Differences developed between China and Britain.
   中英之间产生了分歧。
   It soon developed that our policy was a great success.
   不久人们就看到我们的政策是非常成功的。
   It develops now why they take interests in companies in China, but not in Hong Kong.
   现在看得清楚了， 为什么他们对中国的公司感兴趣而对香港的公司不感兴趣。

   应当在此补充一句，develop作“显现”“出现”“发生”解是美国英语，在英国已被视作“陈旧的”(obsolete)用法。
 在工程领域和科技文章里，develop常作“研制”或“研制成功”解。
 例如： Our factory has developed a new-type computer.(我们工厂已研制成功一种新型的电脑。)
 在摄影行业里， develop也有它自己的涵义。 下面略举数例：

   developing-out paper  --显像纸
   color development  --彩色显色
   developer  --显影剂或显色剂
   dispalacement development --置换显影
