Society 与community 有人问，国际社会能否翻译为“international society”。的确，在英文中表示“社会”的有“society”和“community”，但“国际社会”应该翻译为“international community ”或“community of nations”。 Society与community同源自拉丁文，皆指社会，虽然如此，二者在用法上仍有差别。

Society指（1）社会，如西方社会（Western society）;(2) 社会阶层，如高收入阶层（a high income society）；（3）上流社会，社交界，如当地的上流社会（a local society）；（4）交往，如乐于与邻居交往（enjoy the society of one’s neighbors）；（5） 总称的朋友，伴侣，如有许多朋友（have plenty of society ）；（6） 社团，会社，学会，如辩论社（a debating society）; (7) 动植物的小群落，如黄蜂窝（a society of wasps¹）。

 Community指（1）社会或社区，特指由同住一地区或一国的人所构成的社会或社区，如纽约的华侨社会（the Chinese community in New York）；（2）团体，界，如工商界（business community）；（3）公众，如社会贫困阶层（the poorer classes of community）；（4）国家间的共同体，如欧洲防务共同体（European Defense² Community）；（5）共有，共享，共同责任，如货物的共有（the community of goods）；（6）共同性，一致，相同，如利益的一致（the community of interests）。

由此可见，这两个词虽然相似，但仍有一些区别： 1. 表示国际社会用“community” 2. 表示国内社会或上流社会，用“society”。例如“society page”是社交新闻版，“society woman”是上流社会的女子。 3. 表示社区，即国内社会中的较小单位，用“community ”。例如“community page” 是社区新闻版，“community leader”是社区领导。 4. 表示社团，用“society”。 5. 其他如共同天线（antenna³ ），团体精神（spirit community）则都用“community” 当这两个词做形容词时，尤可看出之间的差别，因此使用时要格外小心。
