Deadly Dolphins

1. People like dolphins. They are regarded as smart (at least compared with the average fish), and cute. They also have a large vocabulary with which they 1)communicate with one another in a very human way. Now, however, researchers in America 2)claim that some of the sounds that dolphins make are not just harmless 3)gossip.

2. Scientists from universities in Hawaii and Florida say that they have taken videos of dolphins chasing 1)schools of fish while 2)emitting very low-3)frequency sounds. The fish being chased apparently became confused by the sounds and began to either swim around in circles or stop swimming altogether. The researchers say that the sounds appeared to damage the fish's hearing and so confuse them.

Buried 6)eels jumped out of the sand and either swam around as if they were drunk or just 7)floated there waiting for the dolphins to start their lunch.

4. Similar 1)theories about dolphins using their voices as weapons have been around for nearly twenty years. This, however, is the first time that researchers have got hard evidence that dolphin voices can be deadly to their 2)prey.
