As we all know, Beijing hosts not only the 2008 Olympics but also the 2008 Paralympic Games. We have succeeded in the Olympic Games, so we believe we will host a very successful Paralympics.

众所周知，北京不但举办2008奥运会，而且也要举办2008残奥会。我们在奥运会上已经取得了成功，我们相信也会有一个成功的残奥会。

The Paralympic Games are a multi-sport event for athletes with physical, mental and sensorial disabilities. This includes mobility¹ disabilities, amputees, visual disabilities and those with cerebral² palsy. The Paralympic Games are held every four years, following the Olympic Games, and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). (The Paralympic Games are sometimes confused with the Special Olympics World Games, which are only for people with intellectual disabilities).

残奥会是一种为身体，智力和感觉有障碍的运动而举办的多项运动会。包括有运动障碍的，截肢的，视觉障碍的和大脑有缺陷的运动。残奥会在奥运会之后也是四年一次。由国际残奥会管理。残奥会有时候会和特殊奥运会相混淆，后者只为有智力障碍的人而举办。

The name derives³ from the Greek "para" ("beside" or "alongside") and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games. No relation with paralysis⁴ or paraplegia is intended, though the word Paralympic was originally a portmanteau combining 'paraplegic' and 'Olympic'.

残奥会名字起源于希腊语“para”( 意思是，旁边或者在旁边)，因而，归纳于奥运会相似的竞赛。虽然残奥会的单词是瘫痪和奥运会的合成词，但是与瘫痪或者下肢瘫痪没有直接联系。

The first Paralympics was hosted by Italy in Rome 1960. This summer Paralympics is the thirteenth of the events. Next time the Paralympics will be hosted in London 2012. Let's wish all the athletes best. Hope them enjoy the games as much as they can.
