Joan Baez 琼拜雅这位美国民谣之后，有好几首学吉他者必备的传世之作，如" Donna , Donna "、" The night they drove old Dixies down "及" Diamonds and rust "等。
琼拜雅的嗓音清亮纯净，技巧成熟，许多知名作曲家都乐意提供作品给她，因而她比较知名的曲子大都不是自己所写，“ Diamonds and rust ”是她自己谱写的歌曲中最为人熟知的一首。
这首歌的歌词冗长，意象繁复，难以了解其中意涵，原因是歌词中所讲的是琼拜雅个人的一段恋情。
琼拜雅于 50 年代末投入美国民歌运动，进入 60 年代，她遇见了巴布狄伦（Bob Dylan，被尊称为“民谣摇滚之父”，写过多首名曲），两人惺惺相惜，彼此都十分赏识对方的才华，而展开了一段秘密恋情。这段感情最后无疾而终，1975 年，琼拜雅写下这首曲子，纪念当年两人亦师亦友的感情，后来“钻石与铁锈”也被认为是她最好的一首创作曲。
