A number of factors, including a declining birth rate, difficulties in obtaining quality education, and easier access to overseas universities, have combined to drain the student pool of Chinese universities.

文中的student pool指的是高考“生源”，pool在这里是“备用人员”的统称，比如pool of applicants（应聘人才库）、male/female pool（男/女生源）。Pool还常用来指“共用的资源或资金”，比如gene pool（基因库）、forex reserve pool（外汇储备库）、talent pool（人才库）等等。

National college entrance exam (NCEE，全国高考)曾被描述为“千军万马挤独木桥”。为了使更多人接受到大学教育，数年前，大学曾掀起一股scale expansion（扩招）热潮。而如今，读大学的道路似乎已经变成一座立交桥。很多高中增设“出国班”，还有些则通过NCEE migrant（高考移民）更顺利地拿到key universities（重点大学）的录取通知书。北大等高校已经开始实行nominations from their headmasters（校长推荐制）以及independent recruitment （自主招生），这些都是对我国目前高考制度的有益尝试。
