"Bakugai," or "explosive1 buying", a phrase referring to record-level shopping sprees by Chinese tourists in Japan, has been named the Japanese Word of the Year.

The top winning phrase, "Bakugai," frequently appears on Japanese media in recent days, after busloads of Chinese travelers arrived at duty-free stores in Tokyo's shopping districts, purchasing items including rice cookers and high-tech2 toilet seats.

Chinese tourists purchased more than 60 billion yen3 ($488 million) worth of goods in Japan with China's UnionPay bank cards during the Spring Festival holiday in February, which was a 250 percent year-on-year.
