energy crunch 能源危机

Power shortages that gripped many parts of the country in recent months could herald¹ the worst energy crunch² in years amid growing concerns that economic growth may suffer.

近几个月来国内许多地区出现的电力短缺预示着将可能出现数年来最严重的能源危机，有关经济增长会因此受阻的担忧也在加剧。

在上面的报道中，energy crunch即“能源危机”，指因为能源供应短缺或是价格上涨而影响经济，通常涉及到石油、电力或其他自然资源的短缺。能源危机通常会造成economic recession（经济衰退）。Crunch在这里的意思是“（突发的）不足，短缺”，例如credit crunch（信贷紧缩），supply crunch（供应紧张）。

自三月份以来，在部分省市开始出现power cut（停电）和blackout（断电），原因是price control（价格控制）、surging demand（需求上涨）和a drop in hydropower production（水电产量下降）。目前我国为了解决能源危机，正在大力推广新能源，并计划建设new-energy model city（新能源示范城）。
