Chinanews, Lhasa, Dec. 27 – On a 4,800-meter-high mountain in Tibet, the members of Tibetan Mountaineering Team are undertaking1 tense and hard training and mock exercises, in preparation for the torch relay of the Beijing Olympics, which will enable them to scale the top of Mount Qomolangma (known in the West as Mt. Everest), the world's highest mountain.
In line with the requirements of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), among nearly 100 members of the Tibetan Mountaineering Team, 55 at last were picked for the mission through strict selection, 70 percent of whom have the background of climbing mountains at an altitude of 8,000 meters or above. They will play important roles in the torch relay on Mount Qomolangma. The torch fire of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will be fetched from the Ancient Olympia in the March of 2007, and then go through 28 cities of the five continents and all provinces, autonomous2 regions and municipalities in China, and be carried up to Mount Qomolangma. This will be the first time that the Olympic torch reaches this peak.
