Chinanews, Beijing, October 9 – 2007 Gold & Silver Marriage Ceremony will be started in Beijing on October 19, while Hainan and Taiwan will also celebrate the event at the same time.

 

All the Chinese couples who have married for 50 years or 25 years can apply for participation1 in the ceremony online.

 

Currently there are 147 million Chinese aged2 over 60, taking up 11% of the total population. By 2020, the figure will reach 248 million. Rapid aging process will surely affect both China’s economic and social development.

 

October 19 is the Double Ninth Festival in China (the 9th day of the 9th lunar month), a special day for Chinese to show their respect for people of advanced age. Chinese take seniors in the family as a treasure, for they believe seniors having seen much of the world are experienced and knowledgeable3.
