An escalator was bent1 out of shape due to overcrowding during a job fair held in Zhengzhou on Sunday, November 19, 2006. |
Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 6 – With the coming of the job-hunting season this year, many Chinese college graduates are exhausted2 by attending numerous job fairs. As the number of job vacancies3 is less than the number of the graduates, many of them are suffering from employment phobia.
Around 30 thousand job hunters flocked into the "National Job Fair 2006" in Beijing last Sunday (Dec. 3), while about a thousand companies from all over the country could provide no more than 10 thousand positions. A lot of graduates crowded there and lingered back and forth4 each with an anxious and eager face, but left with a great show of disappointment. Statistics show that there will be 4.8 million students to graduate from colleges and universities next year compared with 4 million this year. Severe competition in employment brings "anxiety", "annoyance5", and even "job-hunting phobia" looming6 in the campus. Not long ago, a postgraduate7 Hong Qiankun in Tsinghua University committed suicide because of failure in job-hunting, astonishing quite a few Chinese people. According to some news reports, Hong left a letter before suicide, saying "I can't find a job and don't want to be a burden to my family." Related data show that up to now 9 students have committed suicide this year in Beijing's universities. Experts say study and employment are the biggest pressure for students. They call on the whole society to pay more attention to this phenomenon. On the one hand, more job opportunities and channels need to be provided to fresh college graduates; on the other, the society should give more tolerance8 to these green hands.
