Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 15 - Information from the National Statistics Bureau shows that in China, unbalanced birth ratio between male and female newborn babies rose from 107.4 in the mid1 1980s to 118.58 in 2005, far from the normal range, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

 

According to the fifth national population census2, the unbalanced birth ratio problem has expanded from eastern coastal3 cities to central and western regions. The number of provinces where there is serious gender4 ratio problem, or where the gender ratio between male and female newborn babies exceeds 117, has risen to 14. In some places, the tilting5 figure has reached as high as 130. The problem has been harassing6 China for more than 20 years.

 

If the problem is not solved at present, experts point out, by 2020 when China enters into a well-off society, some 30-40 million men at marriageable age will not be able to find a woman to marry. By then, social problems such as extramarital affairs, illegitimate children, sexual harassments, sex offensive behaviors, sex crimes or sex transactions, will become rampant7 and damage social harmony. The unbalanced birth ratio problem will not only disrupt the existing training structure in society, it will, more severely8, challenge the sustainable development of population and social progress.
