　这是一首著名的英国民谣改编的作品，原来的曲名是「What child is this」。所谓的「绿袖子」，据说是十九世纪以前，英国对妓女的别称，不过当时的妓女通常只卖笑不卖身，而且都是因为家境清苦，不得已才下海，和现代大不相同，所以才会有歌曲中对妓女如此痴情的男子。我国古代也曾以「红袖」来称呼风尘女子，和西方可谓相映成趣。
