n. Lawyer(especially in England)who can plead or argue a case in one of the higher courts. In England and Wales, a barrister is a member of one of the Inns of Court; he has passed examinations and spent one year in pupilage before being called to the bar. Barristers have right of audience in all courts in England and Wales. Note also that barristers are instructed only by
solicitors1 and never by members of the public. A barrister or a group of barristers is referred to as 'counsel'.
